Summer is a beautiful season for riding, trail adventures, and long days at the stable — but it also comes with challenges for our horses. As much as we enjoy the sunshine, the heat and insects can make this season uncomfortable, even stressful, for them. That’s why proper summer horse care is not optional — it’s essential.
One of the biggest concerns during warm months is the constant presence of flies, mosquitoes, and biting insects. Not only are they annoying, but they can cause irritation, skin infections, and even allergic reactions in sensitive horses. I’ve seen firsthand how uncomfortable a horse can get from repeated bites — tail swishing, stomping, and restless behavior are all signs they need relief.
Here’s how I help protect my horse during summer:
🧴 Fly Repellents & Sprays
I use a gentle, effective fly spray daily — especially before turnout or riding. Natural formulas with essential oils are great for sensitive skin, while stronger options work well for heavily infested areas.
🧢 Fly Masks & Sheets
These are absolute lifesavers! A breathable fly mask keeps the face and eyes protected, and a lightweight fly sheet helps prevent body bites without overheating the horse.
💧 Clean Environment
Flies love dirty, moist places. I make sure to clean stalls regularly, remove manure from paddocks, and avoid standing water around the barn.
🌿 Turnout Timing
When possible, I turn my horse out in the early morning or evening to avoid peak insect activity and the harsh midday sun.
